Marie Martin and
her husband, Ed, moved to Coos Bay, OR from Los Angeles, CA in
August, 1983. That same month, the Martins went to Unity
Village to complete their Unity teacher’s training. When they
returned to Coos Bay, Marie had a strong urge to start a study
group. She contacted the Unity of the Valley Church in Eugene,
OR, asking if they would sponsor a study group in Coos Bay.
Upon receiving approval, she placed an announcement in the
local newspaper. |
A
small group of people seeking a common-sense approach to
religion and Truth joined Marie’s study group. In May 1984,
the growing group petitioned to become a church and once again
Unity of the Valley provided sponsorship. |
The
first service was held on Sunday, September 16, 1984, at the
Coos Bay Senior Center. Marie, as a licensed Unity Teacher,
gave the first talk entitled “New Beginnings”. Marie continued
serving Unity by the Bay until the summer of 1985 when the
first minister called was Carole Rose (McArthur). Articles of
Incorporation were filed February 10, 1986. The services were
now being held in spare space provided by the First
Presbyterian Church of Coos Bay. |
In the year of the new millennium,
the members were motivated to search for a building of their
own to accommodate their growing congregation. We found and
purchased our home of today, the old Presbyterian Church in
North Bend, OR. A great deal of love, work and money was
poured into the purchase and renovation of the then
76-year-old building.
|
Our glorious move from Coos Bay to our new home in North
Bend was the first Sunday of December, 2000. Many Souls
have been instrumental in the birth and growth of Unity
by the Bay Church. Whatever brings you into this path
called Unity, say a prayer of gratitude for all who have
had a part and bless them for creating what began as a
vision of learning, love and
cooperation. |
